Artist Statement/Project
My photographs are about landscapes that speak of memory and history. I am drawn to visual images that reflect the relationship of nature and culture in the landscape.
For the past ten years, I have been photographing places and natural landscapes along Long Island’s East End to document vanishing open spaces and an agricultural way of life.
This project has evolved into two photographic series - Vanishing Landscapes captures the fragile beauty of our changing world and Sense of Place evokes a feeling of attachment and belonging.
Working with infrared film, I am able to create soft, grainy photographs that convey a sense of timelessness. I then apply oils and pencils to the photograph to heighten its visual intensity and add to its texture and depth. This technique allows me to reinterpret the image while retaining a realistic quality.
